What is Tarmacadam?

Tarmacadam is a bituminous material used in paving, also known as Tarmac or Asphalt. Tarmacadam is comprised of tar and broken stone which is mixed and shaped during paving, usually laid and brushed evenly and then compressed by industrial machinery such as a steam roller.

Tarmacadam is suitable for areas to be trafficked by vehicles, such as roads, car parks, drives and forecourts. Tarmacadam can also be used for paths, although it is not advisable using Tarmacadam for garden paths. In general, all Tarmacadams should be machine laid by an paver machine except where it would be impossible/impractical to use a paver. Such exceptions include small areas (such as some private driveways), confined spaces and footpaths. On private works, the contractor will ascertain which is the most appropriate laying method to use. In most cases, the finish achieved with machine-laid bitmac is far superior to hand-laid material.
